A café from a local DJ who believes both good coffee and music have the power to set the tone of your day.
Sway was started in 2025 by Declan Huston, a DJ, barista and business owner who has spent over a decade in hospitality, starting at Caffeteca in North Adelaide before working his way through Abbots and Kinney and Cotto.
With 13 years behind a coffee machine and 11 behind the decks, he wanted to bring those two worlds together. A spot where you can grab and go or sit for a couple of hours and just let the music take you somewhere.
"You're doing something that people love, you're being part of their day or night. With the DJing, the music has got to be great, the coffee has got to be great. Otherwise their day is ruined. Being part of people's day, I sort of live for it."
Sway brews Ona Coffee, a Canberra-based roaster that's taken off in Melbourne and building a solid following in Adelaide. Their award-winning Raspberry Candy milk-based roast has a sweet berry and creamy white chocolate flavour profile. Worth trying.
Declan chose Ona because of a personal connection with the company and for the quality of what they put out. It means a coffee at Sway costs a little more than your average cup, but most people reckon it's worth it.
"Watching people enjoy music while having a nice coffee is quite a nice feeling. Very wholesome."
The playlist at Sway shifts throughout the day. Mellow in the morning, then picking up as the hours roll on. Declan pulls a lot from local Adelaide artists on Spotify and Bandcamp, and hopes to eventually have local DJs come in and play on site.
"I want to play music that makes you want to drink coffee and eat pastry."
Sway is not just somewhere to grab a coffee. It's a spot where the music and the espresso work together. Somewhere you can duck in for five minutes or stay for two hours. Either way, you're welcome.
"My goal is really good coffee, a nice menu, and a little hub for people to come and hang out. We just become part of their day."
